Discover the Inspiration for Villa d'Este

The Villa d'Este, commissioned by Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este, created a palatial setting surrounded by a spectacular terraced garden in the late-Renaissnace manner style. The design took advantage of the dramatic slope where the villa was being built, but required innovations to bring in sufficient water supply. The designers employed cascades, water tanks, troughs and pools, water jets and fountains. The result is one of the series of great 17th century villas with water-play structures in the hills surrounding the Roman Campagna.
