The Medici family is well documented in Italy for a multitude of reasons including an unlikely one; the popularity of the rooster. In 15th-century Florence assassins targeted Guiliano de'Medici but he was saved by the loud crowing of alarmed roosters. In gratitude, Medici had hundreds of glazed clay wine pitchers made in the shape of roosters and distributed to the citizens of Florence complete with the wine inside! The intersection of good fortune and good politics produced an enduring symbol that is a staple of Tuscan decor today.
